Back before the alien invasion, the Blob was part of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, a team of mutant villains led by the shapechanger Mystique. The other members were Avalanche, Pyro, and Destiny. When mutant and human relationships began to get really bad, Mystique decided that it was too dangerous for the Brotherhood to continue their current path. She offered the services of the team to Valerie Cooper, the United States National Security Advisor, in exchange for full pardons. Cooper accepted and the team was renamed Freedom Force.

As a government-sponsored team, Freedom Force took on various missions in the years before the invasion. These included arresting Magneto for crimes against humanity, enforcing the Mutant Registration Act, arresting the outlaw X-Men, and saving the people of Dallas from an attack by an evil god. New members were added, including Spiral, Crimson Commando, Stonewall, and Super Sabre.

After the invasion, the Kree co-opted the U.S. government and Freedom Force was given an ultimatum: work for the aliens or join the surviving superhumans in the detention camps. Most of the team, including the Blob, refused to choose either option. They split up and went on the run, returning to life as criminal fugitives. It’s been a few years now, but the Blob’s luck hiding under the assumed name of Rufus Woodgood has finally run out and he’s been captured…
